Ladies do all sorts of things to look and feel sexy. Waxing here, threading there, and don?t forget plucking. We workout, use cosmetics, have our hair cut, dyed, and styled by professionals. Some women choose to have cosmetic procedures or even plastic surgery in the name of beauty. What do men do to stay sexy?
Some popular ways to look gorgeous are about maintaining health, while others can be downright dangerous.
Straight Shave
The days where men went to the barber shop for a shave fell out of trend for some time, but they?re coming back. Barber spas are popping up in cities, suburbs, and even malls. Expert barbers apply a warm towel, then pre-shave oil, then a hot lather of shaving cream before shaving with a straight razor. Many popular spas are offering full-service shaves for around $50.
Tooth Whitening
Brightening up your pearly whites has long been touted as a way to look younger without much effort or surgery. Options for tooth whitening for men range from whitening toothpaste, gels, pens, or strips to use at home, to procedures only available from a professional dentist.
Plastic Surgery
This one can be a social taboo, a secret, or proof of wealth depending on who you ask. No doubt about it, though, plastic surgery is popular among American men. From 2000 to 2005, Botox treatments among men increased 233%. Also popular with men are nose jobs, hair implants, and liposuction.
Tanning
Once a sign of affluence, sporting a golden tan is still a popular way to look sexy. The dangers of ultraviolet rays are no secret: sunburn, sun spots, sagging skin, and sunburns. Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put out a warning about the color additive in spray tanner, dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It has not been proven safe to contact mucus membranes and sensitive skin, like eyelids. Booth applications cause people to inhale the mist, which could be hazardous to your health. The FDA recommends using cream or home spray tanning because users can easily avoid inhaling DHA.
Quit Smoking
Most smokers know all the major medical reasons to quit smoking, like coronary heart disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, increased risk of stroke, and many types of cancer. Smoking also makes people look significantly older than they are. Visible effects of smoking include cataracts, hair loss, wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of elasticity, and stained fingernails. Reduced blood flow from smoking can also lead to erectile dysfunction.
Colonics
Colonics became wildly popular as a way to boost energy, lose weight quickly, and detoxifying. They?ve even become part of a controversial cancer treatment program. Colonics are controversial in themselves and usually not recommended by doctors. They may cause dehydration, bowel perforation, electrolyte imbalance, or infection.
Manicures and Pedicures
A well-groomed man is always sexy. Keeping fingernails and toenails trimmed and clean is necessary, but how about a full mani/pedi? They?re becoming extremely popular for men. Several nail polish brands have lines just for men. Orly?s Nails for Males line increased in sales by 20 percent in 2012. While some men choose bold colors, others go for clear or matte clear.
Body Wraps
Body wraps are becoming more and more common amongst men trying to slim down.? Men can purchase body wraps for home use or receive the service in a salon.
People of both sexes have been jumping through hoops since the beginning of time in the name of looking more attractive, more successful, and more important. The possible risks of some procedures are decidedly un-sexy, though some men still do them. What may be the most important is how these choices affect a person?s overall health and self-image.
