Why Alkalize Your Body

It Works greensYou may have heard some theories about the pH Diet, alkalizing diet, “ash diet,” and alkaline water. An adult’s body weight is about 8% circulating blood. The pH balance of blood should be between 7.36 — 7.44. A pH below seven indicates an acidity, while pH above seven is alkaline. So the blood’s balance is slightly more alkaline than acid. This is what has inspired pH diets. However, your blood self-regulates its pH level.

Why Alkalize?
If your blood maintains its proper pH no matter what you ingest, then why should you be concerned with alkalizing? Simply put, these alkalizing diets are very healthy overall. The most alkaline foods are leafy greens and citrus fruits. If you’re looking to be healthier, even to lose weight naturally, then by basing your diet on drinking water and eating a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and unprocessed foods, you should be able to achieve your goals.

Despite limited medical research, many alternative practitioners believe that alkaline diets may improve overall health. In the United States, many people eat a diet high in acid-producing foods and this shift is sometimes blamed for poor health and disease process. Some reasons that an alternative practitioner might prescribe an alkaline diet include: fatigue, sinus congestion, headaches, excessive mucous, and anxiety. But again, there are no published medical studies proving health benefits specific to following a certain alkalizing diet.

How Can You Alkalize?
Proper diet and high quality supplements could help you to achieve proper pH balance of your blood and enjoy the health benefits that come with that balance. Information abounds on very specific alkalizing diets you can follow, so instead of giving you another itemized guide, here are some guidelines to keep in mind.

You should drink lots of water as part of an alkaline diet, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be alkaline water. The benefits of drinking alkaline water are arguable. However, it has been proven helpful in treating acid reflux disease by denaturing pepsin, a digestive enzyme that can cause damage to the esophagus in reflux sufferers. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Leafy greens and citrus fruits are especially alkaline. Examples include: collard greens, spinach, kale, celery, avocado, lemons, limes, grapes, and tomatoes. Avoid acid-producing food and drinks, like coffee, soda, fried foods, and high fat foods. Animal proteins are generally considered acidifying, which is why pH diets tend to be meatless or vegetarian.

Supplements can be a big help, not just for alkalizing, but for getting extra nutrients from natural sources. One such quality supplement is It Works! Greens. It’s a great way to turbo-charge your pH diet. The orange-flavored, alkalizing powder drink mix includes 38 herbs and nutrient-dense ingredients in bioavailable form. That gives you the nutritional equivalent of eight servings of fruit and vegetables. The extra boost in nutrients can be beneficial to anyone’s diet, even if you’re not following a specific alkalizing meal plan.
